Shirley shares meals with the Oasis Café community on Monday evenings. Meet: Shirley.
When and how did you first come across Oasis Café?
I heard of it years ago from friends who volunteered there, but at that time I was too busy to get involved. To be honest, when I first started the volunteer work, I didn't expect to get anything out of it. I signed up because I believe it is a worthwhile ministry. Now that I have been involved with it for over a year (since Fall 2023), I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoy volunteering at Oasis Café.
What are some things that you do at Oasis Café?
My main role is setting up the tables and serving the guests, but for a short while, I've also worked in the kitchen helping whenever I'm needed. I've also done plating and hosting a couple of times. It gives me joy to see how a meal thoughtfully prepared and lovingly served can be so powerful in creating community and belonging. It warms my heart to see the smile on the faces of our guests and hear their laughter, and more than once I was touched and inspired by the conversations I had with them.
What keeps you coming back?
What I didn't expect when I signed up was that Oasis Café also offers me a community. Working alongside fellow volunteers and staff often leads to meaningful conversations and connections. I am inspired and encouraged by the faithful service of many old-timers. I also enjoyed the time of sharing/devotion before serving the meals. It helps to reinforce our shared purpose and mission, foster a strong team spirit among us, and create a supportive and nurturing environment.
How have you seen God at work in your own life through the ministry of Oasis Café?
Volunteering at Oasis Café has opened my eyes to see how God works in different people's lives and has taught me precious lessons of humility, empathy, kindness, and the importance of withholding judgment in our interactions with one another. I always leave Oasis Café with a deep sense of gratitude and joy.
What do you want to say to someone interested in serving at Oasis Café?
To those who are interested in volunteering, I would simply say "come and see." It may be a cliché, but we do have the power to touch another life through a small act of hospitality, and in turn, we will be blessed by our generous God.
